Vipassana Meditation is one of the most ancient techniques of meditating in India. It was rediscovered by Gautam Buddha more than 2500 years ago. Vipassana meditation focus is mainly to promote conscious lifestyle changes and even works towards enhancing concentration of mind. It teaches human beings to see life just the way it is in all its reality without being affected by it. This meditation also helps in providing deeper psychological introspection and ultimately results in certain behavioral changes that are long lasting.
The following are the basic steps to practice Vipassana meditation:
- Sit in a quiet place dark room
- No disturbance for at least 20 minutes
- Make your head and spine straight
- Two options – sit on the floor or on a chair as per your requirement
- Close your eyes to avoid outside influences
- Now start focusing on your breathing
- Study the length of each breath – whether short long or heavy
- Do not judge or try and control your breathing
- Be neutral with your breathing
- Thoughts will come up, naturally. Just watch them, let them go, and return your attention to breath.
- You might get distracted by itches, emotions, sounds, etc. That is OK. Don’t fight the distraction – simply notice it, let your attention land softly on it, and it will pass sooner or later, and return to the breath.
- If you keep practicing you will be able to focus on the breathing for long periods without distraction
- There should be zero disturbance during the meditation, do not attend any questions or thoughts arise during the meditation
Vipassana Meditation is one of the best technique that works towards bringing out full transformation of the human personality. No wonder this meditation technique is usually described as a technique of purifying the mind of the habits it has developed long back. This leads the individual in exhibiting the true qualities of a human being such as peace, joy, bliss, tolerance, equanimity, kindness, sympathy, forgiveness and a lot more.
